Why Small Businesses Need Immutable Backups in 2026

Ransomware is evolving. Discover why standard local backups are no longer enough to protect your critical business data.

If you own a small business, you probably have some form of backup in place. Maybe it’s an external hard drive plugged into your server, or perhaps a basic cloud sync service like OneDrive or Dropbox.

A few years ago, that might have been enough. Today, it’s a recipe for disaster.

The Evolution of Ransomware

Modern ransomware strains don’t just encrypt your files and demand payment. They are specifically designed to hunt down your backups first. If your backup drive is connected to your network—or if your cloud sync automatically uploads the newly encrypted files—your safety net is destroyed before you even realize you’ve been attacked.

“Ransomware operators know that if you have backups, you won’t pay the ransom. Their first priority is to compromise your disaster recovery systems.”

What is an Immutable Backup?

An immutable backup is a backup file that cannot be altered, overwritten, or deleted by anyone—not even a system administrator with full credentials—until a specific retention period has passed.

When you use immutable cloud storage:

  1. Your server backs up data to the cloud.
  2. The cloud storage locks that backup file immediately.
  3. If a hacker breaches your server and attempts to issue a “delete all” command to your cloud storage, the cloud provider simply rejects the command.

The 3-2-1 Rule

We strongly advocate for the 3-2-1 backup strategy:

  • 3 copies of your data
  • 2 different storage media
  • 1 copy stored offsite (immutable cloud)

By combining local image-based backups for fast recovery with immutable cloud backups for guaranteed protection, you eliminate the threat of data loss entirely.
